Avec le même code, je ne reproduit pas le problème, ni sous IDE ni autrement.
Le fait d'ajouter un MsgBox fonctionne bien chez moi, il affiche "Z", sans surprise.
Le problème ne vient donc pas du code, qui en lui même est correct et ne contient pas de trucs "bizarres" ou connus pour provoquer ce genre de plantage bizarre.
Tests réalisés sous XP Home SP1 et XP Pro SP2, avec VB6 SP6.

Je conseillerai toutefois de stopper le Timer lors du MsgBox, afin d'éviter un empilage de Message Box (surtout, si on laisse la touche enfoncée...), puis de le réactiver après :
