Problems with back-lighting: are they normal or is my camera not working properly?

I have a Minolta Dimage 7i. I am generally happy with it except when I take
pictures in particular conditions of back-lighting or very bright sky in the
direction of the sun (even though the camera is in the shadow). In this
cases the pictures appear to be washed out around the parts where the bright
light comes from (see examples of pictures with this defect in
http://www.cancellieri.org/temp/samples_of_pics_with_defects.htm). I would
like to have the opinions of experts to know whether these results are
normal given the circumstances or my camera is not working properly.
Also, as English is not my mother tongue, I would like to know the exact
name of this defect (e.g. glare? saturation? fade out? wash out?) and the
possible cause of it.
Thanks in advance.

You'd be better off posting to an English speaking group. Other than that, your pictures are completely normal to my eyes. Did you see otherwise with another camera ? Mixing highlights and shadows as you did ?
