Le système GNU n'était pas complet quand NeXTStep a été créé, Mac OS X n'étant qu'une évolution de NeXTStep on voit mal pourquoi il aurait changé de noyau.
Par contre le userland de Mac OS X est truffé de logiciels sous licence GPL : bash, gcc, Samba, etc.

Pour gcc, la licence GPL gène Apple, qui est en train de développer sa propre suite de compilation avec llvm & clang, sous licence BSD. L'intérêt pour Apple est d'avoir des bouts du compilateur dans son interface de développement graphique Xcode, qui elle n'est pas libre, mais reste gratuite.
