"Metallica Fans Upset Over “Death Magnetic” Compression
Metallica has returned to the scene with a number one album, but some fans
are angry over the compression used.
By Robert Archer
11.14.2008 — Installers who want to demonstrate their systems with the
latest music from the biggest groups may want to skip the use of Metallica's
"Death Magnetic" album, currently burning up the Billboard album charts.
Fans of the band are complaining that the new album is overly compressed and
nearly unlistenable.
One fan was apparently so upset he contacted the album's mastering engineer
Ted Jensen, who said he wasn't proud to be associated with the project. The
fan surprised Jensen by posting his response on a Metallica message board.
Some fans have been so upset with the sonic quality of the album that they
have organized a petition to have the album remixed. More than 12,000 have
already signed.
The issue has become big enough that drummer Lars Ulrich responded to
Blender.com, saying the mix of the album is fine.
"Listen, there's nothing up with the audio quality," Ulrich said to Blender.
"It's 2008, and that's how we make records. [Producer] Rick Rubin's whole
thing is to try and get it to sound lively, to get it to sound loud, to get
it to sound exciting, to get it to jump out of the speakers. Of course, I've
heard that there are a few people complaining. But I've been listening to it
the last couple of days in my car, and it sounds f##*% smoking."
He says that he's heard some fans are claiming the Guitar Hero version
sounds better, but he dismisses the controversy by saying the Internet gives
everyone the ability to state an opinion.
Based on the outspoken drummer's comments, it seems unlikely that the group
will address the compression used for the recording."

"musique" jusquà l'éliminer, ça ne me ferait ni chaud ni froid ...!!
