mais il me reste 2 problèmes qui sont peut^être liés)
1- la restauration ne veut pas démarré : accès refusé!
et moins grave:
2- je n'arrive pas à installer ie7 (peut être parce qu'il ne peut pas faire
de point de restauration?)

j'avais initié "problème de réparation XP":

- démarrer / exécuter / net stop wuauserv
- renommer le dossier C:WINDOWSSoftwareDistribution en
C:WINDOWSSoftwareDistribution.old
- désinstaller Windows installer 3.1 (via le panneau de config
ajout/supression de programmes (KB893803) soit s'il n'y est pas, via
C:WINDOWS$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$spuninstspuninst.exe
- rebooter
- exécuter le fichier bat en P.J (réenregistrement d'un certain nombre
de .dll (y'aura une phase un peu plus longue que les autres sur
initpki.dll c'est normal)
- se connecter à Windows update qui en premier va te réinstaller Windows
installer 3.1, puis après le reboot obligatoire, re connexion à Windows
Update qui va te proposer quelques 76/77 MAJ critiques + probablement la
10zaine d'aujourd'hui :o)

Ça a marché pour moi (et pour d'autres ...) yapadraisons ... :-)

Tiens nous au courant...

Avez-vous tenté de désinstaller puis réinstaller Windows Installer ?

(Vous pouvez aussi essayer la réinstallation en mode sans échec)
