Chief Tom
Downtown - Cincinnati Police Chief Tom Streicher initiated a police chase Sunday afternoon when he saw a suspect firing his gun several times near Findlay Market.
The incident began around noon after Chief Streicher saw the man firing several shots at Green and Race Streets. Streicher was off duty and on his way to the market at the time.
"According to the chief, he wasn't firing in the air. The weapon was parallel to the ground which indicates that he was probably shooting at someone in the area of Race and Green," said Sgt. Scott Albert of Cincinnati Police.
Streicher put out a broadcast of a description of the suspect who fled in a Dodge Charger. A chase followed and ended at Gilbert Avenue and Curtis Street in Walnut Hills after the suspect crashed into a parked box truck and then fled on foot.
Cincinnati Police arrested a man matching the suspect's description a short time later on Curtis Street. He is now being questioned by investigators. Officers also recovered a handgun, jacket and mask from a dumpster on Curtis Street.
Police also arrested a second man at the intersection of Gilbert and McMillan who was also carrying a handgun and wanted on several warrants.
He too is being questioned by investigators.
"Very lucky no one was hurt, police officers and chief included. There was very light traffic on a Sunday morning. All procedures were followed. The investigation is ongoing but luckily no one was hurt," said Sgt. Albert.
