Preparing For TV Beyond Windows Vista http://jtsang.blogspot.com/2006/06/preparing-for-tv-beyond-windows-vista.html
Excellent blog post Jason. It pretty much summarizes the challenges, they aren't small either. That's a lot of work...
(I'll enjoy my MCE box "as is" for now.)

Excellent post Jason. Some good news at long, long, last from Microsoft.
For a long time (must be 2 years now) I have been considering an MCE system for my main TV setup, unfortunately Microsoft (even in Vista) still do not support DVB-S (or DVB-C) which are required for DIGITAL Premium TV in Europe (as opposed to last centuries analog method). I spent a hell of lot of time looking at cases, PSUs, Video adaptors, fans, tuner cards, etc. while waiting for Microsoft to get the act together. In the end I built a small very cheap MCE system for DVB-T more for music management than anything.
Now, there is hope for the future that a full blown DVB-S2 system will be possible. (Although discussions on the Internet suggestion it will no longer be possible for hobbiests to build their own and get support for protected TV).
However, there is still in my mind a major area of concern, despite the presentation in the above blog. While DVB-S, CI (Common Interface for conditional access modules), MHEG, and even DVB-S2 are all mentioned, there is not a single word about MPEG4 H.264 (aka. MPEG4 AVC) which is required for European DVB-S2 transmissions.
This new MCE will need to not only be able to record MPEG4, but also play it back (within the live and recorded TV modules rather than just the video module).
