(and if that made no sense whatsoever, ici est le versione originale...)
My wife and I are Americans living in France and we would like to get a
satellite to have some programming in English. I know that both TPS and
Canalsat show movies in English but I am wondering if either is superior in
choices (especially in VO series or other programming). Thanks in advance
for any help provided!

Has anyone here used this Sky service in France? Is it illegal? It would
seem to be the ideal choice for movies, combined with the free BBC channels
for general TV and our French TV channels by antenna (il faut que je

British avoir Sky, oui?

Non.

Just be aware of conmen !
It's always the same problem, Sky digital has no right to broadcast for
Europe. Just for the UK and Ireland.
We have the same problem with Canalsat and TPS, even you can found some
cards across Europe.
I would like to receive ITV, Channel 4, Five. They're free but I need a
Sky card (always the rights by the coverage.) For the present I'm trying
to learn english, by viewing BBC channels only (the others programs on
Astra2 are too bad.)

I have looked at many websites
now for Sky cards and services overseas, and they vary beaucoup! Many seem
to be just one fellow sitting by his computer waiting for CB orders :)
Also, it is veyr tempting to go with Sky since everything would be in
English, but I am not sure I WANT everything in English. I want to be able
to keep watching and listening to French so I can learn it and live amng the
locals. I really do not want to turn into one of those English folks (we
have many in this area) who only watch English TV, only have English
friends, buy everything from England, etc...

To avoid some troubles you can go through Nantes, and found a satellite
reseller. It will be better than an anonymous purchase on the web.
On the other hand, I think the best way for you, it's to buy a special
dish with 2 LNBs (Astra2 and Astra1) and take a subscription on
Canalsat. If you have some difficulties by the understanding of a movie
you will be able to switch to the original version.
Welcome in our country !
