I think you've got it wrong: It's not a question who has more access to
the media. Look again at the "balance" in the polls between Kerry and
Bush even though the lion's share of the coverage is going to the GOP.
What would happen to these numbers if the media coverage were "fair"?
What happens to the media's bottom line if the election becomes a
"slam-dunk" before the fact?
I don't think it's the media being influenced by the GOP or even the
media in cahoots with the GOP. I think it's the GOP realizing that the
"media" (Whatever the hell that actually means) wants only to maintain a
close race because that maintains a large audience, a large advertising
income base, etc. So the GOP is trying to take advantage of the
opportunity given to them by the media.
It's clear the "media" favors Bush, but, really, why? Because he is the
one who needs the help to keep up with Kerry. If Kerry were to bomb
without the media coverage (which was happening in the primary, BTW,
until Dean imploded) then he would get the extra exposure.
The "media" are going to be here a long, long time after either Bush or
Kerry and I doubt that it matters much to the "media" who wins.
Who is really controlling the campaign? Who is really cooperating with
whom?
The bottom line here is that it just may be that the Bush machine is not
actually pulling the strings in this election.
