is that the name of the food-product Spam stands for "spiced ham" and
that junk e-mail is named after it because the two are equally

David Marchand of Montreal suggests that junk e-mail is called spam
after a famous Monty Python song. In the song, the word spam is repeated
endlessly. Likewise, e-mail spam is endlessly repetitive.

Frank Dauenhauer of Rochester, New York, suggests that the word has
nothing to do with Monty Python at all. He writes, "The acronym SPAM
stands for Sales Promotional/Advertising Mail. I saw this definition on
the Web over five years ago."

And finally, Ann Welp of Huntingburg, Indiana, sends this charming trip
down memory lane. (Thanks, Mom!): "It was right after WWII. My mother's
friends were all talking about this wonderful new product called Spam.
They said it was amazingly cheap and simply delicious. So she went to
the corner grocery and came home with a small blue and white can with
the letters S-P-A-M in bright red letters. She showed us how to insert a
metal tab from the top of the can into the key's slit and wind it around
the rectangular can to remove the lid. Out popped this gelatin-encased
hunk of pink meat that smelled exactly like ham. Then, following the
recipe on the side of the can, she decorated the pink meat with two
slices of pineapple, four whole cloves, and two candied cherries, and
baked it for 12 minutes. When it came from the oven it was so pretty! My
father ate his steak medium rare, but the rest of us had wonderful Spam
sandwiches with lettuce on soft fluffy slices of Wonder Bread smeared
with Miracle Whip. When we asked my father why he wasn't having a Spam
sandwich, he said the strangest thing. He said he didn't like parts."

Pas simple comme question, car il n'existe à ma connaissance pas de réponse
unique. De mémoire, et sans aller vérifier sur le web comme le fait ce
tricheur de Fabrice B. ;-) je me souviens d'au moins deux explications qui
circulent au sujet de l'origine du terme "spam" : la première prétend que
cela vient d'une chanson humoristique des Monty Pythons, basée sur un texte
sans réelle signification dans laquelle le mot "spam" revient souvent (mais
je connais ni le titre, ni les paroles de la chanson en question). L'autre
hypothèse dont je me rappelle, c'est que le terme "spam" provient du nom
d'un type de viande de bas de gamme aux Etats-Unis, une espèce de
corned-beef qui porte le nom de "spam" et que personne n'aime vraiment ; on
dit que le courrier-spam est comme la viande-spam car dans les deux cas,
personne ne demande jamais à en recevoir et c'est la première chose que l'on
écarte de son assiette/de son courrier.

Allez à moi : que signifie TWAIN ? Celui qui répond qu'il s'agit d'un
romancier américain du 19ème siècle a perdu :-)

(NB: Terry GILLIAN est le seul Américain de la bande)

[Aparte] : je suis un fan inconditionnel des "Monty Python" depuis plus de
20 ans, je possède 7 VHS + 3 DVD d'eux ;+)
(Holy Graal, Life of Brian, Jabberwocky, Meaning of Life, ...)

Dans un sketch HILARANT de la série "Monty Python's Flying Circus", (c'était
le 25ème, de la 2ème série, enregistré le 25/06/70 et diffusé le 15/12/70
sur la chaine BBC1) on les voit dans un restaurant, à la fois comme clients
et personnels.
Client homme : Eric IDLE
Client femme : Graham CHAPMAN
Serveuse : Terry JONES

Il faut rajouter que cet épisode du "Cirque Volant des Monthy Pythons"
avait comme fil conducteur ce SPAM, qu'on retrouve donc, si je me
souviens bien, dans d'autres sketches. Et puis dans le générique de f in
(qui était parfois détourné), un petit bijou à lui tout seul...

Quoi qu'il en soit, celui qui n'a jamais vu cet épisode a manqué un d es
moments les plus drôles de la télévision mondiale...
