2 RAGTIME SOLO
The differences between the commercial RagTime program and the RagTime
Solo version are
as follows:
• Only one copy of RagTime Solo can be used in a network. If a second
copy is started
on a different computer in the network the program start is interrupted
with an error
message.
• In order to decrease the file size of the program for download the
color profile file does
not contain the data necessary for high performance output equipment.
• For legal reasons RagTime Solo can not be shipped with the
dictionaries necessary for
spell check and hyphenation functions. The respective message will pop
up when you
open the menu Extras t Hyphenate or Extras t Check Spelling.
Dictionaries can be
purchased in our web shop <http://www.ragtime-online.com>.
We encourage you expressly to pass this version of RagTime Solo to
others interested in
using RagTime Solo in accordance with the license conditions.
2.1 RAGTIME SOLO REGISTRATION
After the @ Installation [p. 5] you can explore RagTime Solo, however,
you cannot save
documents and every printed page carries a note about RagTime Solo.
This changes after you registered RagTime Solo. You can do that around
the clock via
our web site. In case you don't have web access, you can @ register per
letter [p. 18].
To begin the registration, just click P Reigster Now after launching
RagTime Solo. A
dialog box lets you open the registration web site in your browser.
You will get your registration code via e-mail. Please enter your e-mail
address and the
registration code in the dialog box. After that, you can save documents
with RagTime Solo
and you can print without additional markers.
2.2 A NEW PROGRAM: HOW DO I GET TO KNOW RAGTIME SOLO?
You can familiarise yourself with RagTime Solo in a variety of ways.
Because learning is a
very individual process the following are simply suggestions from which
you should take
your pick.
• When you start the program a document called d First Steps will
appear. This is an
introduction to the RagTime basics and includes some exercises. Use d
First Steps
to familiarise yourself with working with frames in RagTime.
• Use the RagTime training manual. You will find two versions (a version
for windows
users and a version for Macintosh users) in the folder f Manuals on your
RagTime 6
CD and on our Web site <http://www.ragtime- online.com>. Print off the
exercises relevant to you and work through them. In chapters 6 and 7 you
can learn
basic techniques step by step and get to grips with increasingly complex
tasks in
RagTime.
• Once you have the basics of RagTime Solo it is worth your while
looking for more
detailed information in the on-screen reference manuals and other parts
of program
documentation. You can access these via the menu button Info/Help/Info
or the
equivalent documents in pdf file format in the folder f Manuals on your
RagTime 6 CD
and on our Web site <http://www.ragtime- online.com>.
• In the f Samples folder of your RagTime Solo installation you will
find a wealth
of example documents in subfolders. These documents demonstrate how
versatile
RagTime is in its application. RagTime offers direct access to all
example documents
and relating PDF files via the menu Info / Help t Sample Files t ...
When you want to investigate which components are used to make the
documents
work the way they do, it is helpful to open the inventory by clicking
onto the squirrel.
Read Me: RagTime 5.6.6 Solo for Mac OS X 4
This will list the components applied in the document and with a double
click onto the
component will display details.
• We would like to draw your attention to the folder f Step by Step. The
documents
in this folder give step by step information (for different levels of
experience) about
the creation of a variety of document types. You can investigate
different stages in the
creation of a document by opening the specified documents. You will find
all details on
how to use these documents in the accompanying PDF files.
2.3 WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 5.6.6?
This chapter lists changes from version 5.6.5 to 5.6.6.
• When RagTime is launched, it asks the operating system for installed
script systems
(Roman, Greek, Japanese, etc.). Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) does not answer
correctly, it
reports script systems installed incompletely as available, which
prevents RagTime from
starting. RagTime now checks whether script systems are incomplete and
if so, ignores
them while launching.
• RagTime saves links to other documents (for example, to the stationery
pad a document
was torn off from) in documents as aliases, which are resolved on
request by the
operating system. Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) differs from previous versions
as it cannot
resolve some of these aliases, thus RagTime cannot open the affected
documents.
RagTime now opens the documents nevertheless and asks you to point to a
linked file
as the need arises.
Address Book Functions
• You can access the new fields provided by the Address Book version
shipped with Mac
OS X 10.3 (Panther), i. e. ABRelatedNames and ABDate. Details on these
fields and
their field types are given in the documentation accessible via
RagTime's Help-Menu.
• The specification of a country for address formatting is necessary
under Mac OS X 10.2
(Jaguar) only. Under Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) RagTime uses the setting of
the Address
Book software.
2.4 WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 5.6.5?
This chapter lists changes from version 5.6.4 to 5.6.5. Apart from
various minor details and
cosmetic problems the following problems were solved:
• Spreadsheet cells could lose their formatting (font settings,
background color, etc.) after
saving and closing documents with RagTime 5.6.4.
• Under rare circumstances pasting text into a selection could result in
text being pasted
not at the selection but at the beginning of the text component. This
problem could
occur with recalculated formulas in text as well.

3 HOW TO INSTALL?
You can obtain a copy of RagTime 5.6 for OS X on CD-ROM or as a
compressed disk image
that can be downloaded from the Internet.
$ The disk images usually contain fewer add-ons than the RagTime 5.6 for
OS X CD in
order to facilitate distribution via the Internet.
? Installing RagTime 5.6 for OS X
1 Insert the CD-ROM or double-click the downloaded disk image. In both
cases, a volume will
appear on your desktop.
2 Open the volume.
3 Please read the d Read Me.pdf document that we include with every
installation package.
It contains important information that will make it easier for you to
work with the product.
4 Begin the installation process by double-clicking the installer
package. Mac OS X's own
installer will then guide you through the installation step by step.
l If you would like to transfer some of the components of your existing
version of RagTime,
e. g. dictionaries, please consult the pointers provided in the chapter
on @ Folders
Containing Application Components and Add-Ons [p. 8].
What Do I Need?
• RagTime needs Mac OS X 10.2, recommended is 10.2.3 or newer.
• RagTime 5.6 for OS X occupies some 120 MB of space on the hard disk
plus about 55 MB
per additional language.
• As implied in its name, you can only run RagTime 5.6 for OS X under
Mac OS X. It will not
work in the Classic environment or under Mac OS 9 or earlier.
Read Me: RagTime 5.6.6 Solo for Mac OS X 6
4 WHICH FEATURES ARE EXCLUSIVE TO RAGTIME 5.6 FOR OS X?
RagTime 5.6 for OS X's capabilities have been expanded by adding
features that are possible
when working under Mac OS X.
You can learn more about them by reading the sections included in this
chapter.
4.1 SELECTING YOUR PREFERRED LOCALIZATION
RagTime 5.6 for OS X can be run in 5 languages:
• German (de)
• German for Switzerland (de_CH)
• English (en)
• French (fr)
• Dutch (nl)
Launching the application activates the language selected by the user
under System
Preferences | International | Language. Any user can change this
setting. If the language
that has been activated in the operating system is not available to
RagTime 5.6 for OS X (e. g.
Austrian German), the corresponding base language is used (which would
be German in this
case). If that language is unavailable as well, English is used.
4.2 ACQUIRING PICTURES FROM DIGITAL CAMERAS
RagTime 5.6 for OS X can acquire pictures from any camera supported by
the system
applications Image Capture or iPhoto. To acquire a picture, you can use
the Select Source
and Acquire Data commands in the FiletScanner and Cameras menu, or you
can configure
your operating system so that RagTime is launched automatically as soon
as you connect a
camera to your Macintosh.
If RagTime is running when the camera is connected, you will see a
dialog box with all
the pictures in the camera's memory, and you can choose the picture you
wish to include in
a picture component. However, the operating system's standard settings
invoke iPhoto at
the same time, which causes the program to attempt to acquire pictures
as well.
? To Configure the System to Launch an Application Automatically When
Cameras Are
Connected
1 Launch the application Image Capture. It is located in the folder f
Applications.
2 You can specify the applications that are to be launched when a camera
is connected in the
Preferences dialog box from the following list:
• iPhoto
• Image Capture
• No Application
• Other...
3 Select No Application. This enables you to determine what happens on a
case-by-case
basis. Start the desired application first. Then connect the camera.
4 Quit Image Capture.
4.3 YELLOW NOTES (HELP TAGS)
If the pointer is left on a menu entry, button or another type of
control element for a few
seconds, a "small yellow note" appears.
For elements with lettering (e. g. n Arrowhead Front/Back) the note
provides an
explanation of the command corresponding to the information provided by
Balloon Help in
previous versions of Mac OS.
Read Me: RagTime 5.6.6 Solo for Mac OS X 7
For illustrated elements (e. g. ) in tool bars and palettes, the name of
the
corresponding command is usually displayed. As recommended in the Mac OS
X Guidelines,
RagTime 5.6 for OS X shows a description of the relevant command as soon
as you hold down
the c key at the same time.
4.4 ADDRESS BOOK FUNCTIONS
The Address Book is an integral component of Mac OS X. It allows you to
collect and manage
addresses in a central repository where they are made available to other
applications such
as Mail, iChat, iCal, or RagTime.
RagTime 5.6 for OS X contains a new set of functions specially developed
for this
purpose, which enable you to access the fields of the system's Address
Book in formulas.
The Address Book functions are described in a separate manual. You can
open the
manual via the Help menu in RagTime .
4.5 DISPLAY OF CONTEXT MENU
In previous versions of Mac OS, the contextual menu could only be opened
with a ctrl -
click. Under Mac OS X, it is becoming increasingly common to open this
menu after the
mouse button has been held down for a while as well. If you are using a
mouse with more
than one button, the most convenient way to access the contextual menu
is of course by
using the right button.
You can specify how you want to access the contextual menu in the
Application panel
in the RagTime Settings.
Display of Context Menu
X Only on ctrl-click or Right Mouse Button
The contextual menu will not appear if the left or only mouse button is
held down – no
matter how long.
X After the Left Mouse Button is Depressed for x seconds
The contextual menu appears after the left or only mouse button has been
held down
for a while.
i x
Specify how many seconds the mouse button should be depressed. You can
also enter
fractions.

5 WHAT HAS CHANGED A LITTLE?
Some of RagTime's features and routines behave a little differently in
RagTime 5.6 for OS X
than they did in earlier Mac OS versions.
Further information on this topic is included in the following sections
of this chapter.
5.1 STANDARD FONT
"Palatino" was the default font in previous versions of RagTime 5 for
Mac OS. "Times New
Roman" is now the default font.
This change was necessary because Mac OS X doesn't normally come with
"Palatino"
installed. Moreover, switching to "Times New Roman" facilitates the
exchange of files with
Windows users since this font is available to them too.
l Of course, as usual, you can set your favorite font as the default for
new documents
in the Normal Character style sheet of the d RagTime 5 Auxiliaries (menu
WindowstAuxiliariestCharacter Style Sheet EditortRagTime 5 Auxiliaries,
panel General.
5.2 TAB BUTTONS
The toolbar has new tab buttons. One used to be able to use an
additional button to specify
whether a normal or filled tab was created by clicking in the text
ruler.
If you want to generate tabs with fill characters, in RagTime 5.6
for OS X click the button that lets you specify the tabulator type a
second time (do not double-click!). You will see three dots under the
tab icon.
See also @ Tab Stops and Tab Fill [RagTime Reference]
@ Toolbar for Text [RagTime Reference]
5.3 FOLDERS CONTAINING APPLICATION COMPONENTS AND ADD-ONS
RagTime application components and add-ons are filed differently in
RagTime 5.6 for OS X
than in earlier versions of RagTime for Mac OS. This section tells you
what happened to the
folders you've become familiar with.
f Dictionaries
Dictionaries are now built into RagTime. If you wish to use existing
dictio-
naries for additional languages with RagTime for OS X, copy them into
the
f Contents/Dictionaries folder. To locate the folder, go to the Finder
and
select ( ctrl -Klick) Show Package Contents for RagTime via the
contextual menu.
As before, you can store your user dictionaries in any folder you like
and open them
from there.
f Extensions
This folder has become superfluous. All extensions are now built into
RagTime. Old
extensions for RagTime 3, 4 or 5 can no longer be used.
f Samples
Sample documents get installed in f /Library/Application
Support/RagTime/Samples/. You can access the samples via RagTime's Help
menu.
f Stationery Pads
RagTime 5.6 for OS X creates this folder if it doesn't exist and places
it in the
f Library/Application Support/RagTime folder in every user's f Home
folder.
Read Me: RagTime 5.6.6 Solo for Mac OS X 9
If a f /Library/Application Support/RagTime/Stationery Pads/
folder exists, this folder is used, and the folder in each of the users'
f Home folder is
ignored.
f Preferences
RagTime for Mac OS has placed the files containing settings for the
program and for new
documents and objects in the f System Folder:Preferences:RagTime folder.
RagTime 5.6 for OS X places this information in the
f Library/Preferences/RagTime folder, which is located in every user's
f Home folder.
l You can transfer the file d RagTime 5 Auxiliaries, which contains
settings
for new documents and objects, stylesheets, etc. from your existing
version of
RagTime by copying it into the aforementioned folder.
5.4 SCANNING VIA TWAIN DRIVERS
Under previous versions of Mac OS, applications such as RagTime had to
communicate
directly with TWAIN scanner drivers. With the introduction of Mac OS X
10.2, this communi-
cation is also supported by the operating system. This may cause devices
to have double
entries in the list of TWAIN sources.
5.5 PDF EXPORT
RagTime controls Acrobat Distiller via AppleEvents in order to export
data to PDF files.
However, Acrobat Distiller hasn't (yet) been ported to Mac OS X. Since
Classic applications
cannot be launched reliably via AppleEvents, we recommend launching
Acrobat Distiller
before you start exporting to PDF using RagTime.
$ There is a high risk of RagTime crashing–perhaps not immediately, but
soon after ex-
porting to PDF. We observed this phenomenon only with Mac OS X Version
10.2.2, that
is, not with 10.2.1 or 10.2.0. This problem was fixed in Mac OS X
version 10.2.3.
l Despite this problem, the produced PDF files are correct.
5.6 APPLESCRIPT RECORDING
Mac OS X does not currently allow "normal" programs like RagTime
to record scripts. To record scripts, please use the ScriptEditor
(d Applications/AppleScript/ScriptEditor).
Hopefully, this problem will be fixed with the next update of OS X.
5.7 QUICKTIME MOVIES
QuickTime movies in RagTime 6 film components can only be played in a
separate window.
5.8 DOCUMENTATION
The on-screen documentation (help) for RagTime is supplied in PDF files
that you can open
via the Help menu.
When accessing help via the Help menu, the system tries to open the
files in Acrobat
or Acrobat Reader. Preview, the application that is supplied with Mac OS
X, is also capable
of displaying this file, but is far from capable of taking advantage of
all the features such as
bookmarks and hyperlinks.
If you have the version of Acrobat Reader that came installed with your
system as well
as the full version of Acrobat installed, unfortunately, it is
impossible to predict which of
Read Me: RagTime 5.6.6 Solo for Mac OS X 10
the applications will be used to open the file. Since the full version
is better suited due to
its additional functionality (comments, search tool, etc.), we recommend
that you uninstall
Acrobat Reader.
$ These versions of RagTime's documentation have been designed to be
read on screen
(sections always begin at the top of the page, references can be clicked
without en-
tering a page number, the index has additional hyperlinks, there are no
side margins,
different fonts are used, etc.). You will find printer-friendlier
versions on your RagTime 6
CD and on our Web site <http://www.ragtime- online.com>.
5.9 FILE NAMES
Apple Macintoshes have a tradition of associating applications with
files using so-called
type and creator identifiers, which cannot be influenced directly by the
user. Other operating
systems establish these links using file name extensions with a period
and a suffix. The
extension or suffix for RagTime documents is .rtd, and for RagTime
stationery pads it is
.rtt.
Both conventions work under Mac OS X, as long as the storage device is
HFS-formatted.
On UFS-formatted storage devices, only file name extensions are
recognized. This is why
RagTime appends the right extension to names given to new files. This
ensures they are
linked to the right application under OS X and facilitates exchanging
files with Windows-
based systems.
l If a file has been flagged with an extension as well as with a type
and creator identifier,
the type and creator "win".
l You can use the AppleScript d Append File Extensions.scpt (included on
the
RagTime CD) to add the right file name extension to your existing
RagTime documents.
5.10 STATIONERY PADS
A glitch in Mac OS X makes it very confusing to work with RagTime
stationery pads. Unfortu-
nately, RagTime 5.6 for OS X is not capable of working around all of
these difficulties. What
makes matters worse is that it is hard to recognize the problems, which
means that you will
have to bear with us as we take you on a little excursion through time.
Tell us about the good old days, Granddad!
RagTime was able to handle stationery pads from the get-go (Version 1
was released in 1986).
The program featured a special type of document for stationery pads,
including tear-off
settings, etc. In a nutshell: RagTime stationery pads worked and have
since become very
popular among our users.
Then, in May of 1991, Apple moved to System 7 and introduced stationery
pads in the
Finder information as a ground-breaking concept (n Stationery pad).
Here's an excerpt from
"What's new in 7.0"1 :
Stationery pads let you easily create documents with common elements.
For
example, you could have a stationery pad with the information that you
always put
at the top of a weekly report. To create a stationery pad, first create
a document
with the common elements you want to use in several documents. [. . . ]
To convert
a document to a stationery pad, select the document's icon and choose
Get Info
from the File menu. Then check the box labeled "stationery pad".
1
Publish and Subscribe was introduced as a revolutionary innovation in
Mac OS 7.0, which many
analysts believed would deliver a deadly blow to RagTime. Now who would
need an integrated program
such as RagTime?, they wondered, claimimg that all specialized
applications were capable of equalling
or surpassing RagTime in performance, thanks to Publish and Subscribe.
Somehow, however, Publish
and Subscribe ceased to be fashionable and was relegated to extinction

Documents that were promoted to stationery pads using this switch got a
special icon with a
dog-ear on the bottom right-hand corner.
To ensure that the stationery pad worked with all programs, when these
types of
documents were opened, the Finder created a duplicate and made the
application open it.
Great! That enabled stationery pad management in TeachText too (which
was later renamed
SimpleText and is now called TextEdit).
And since some programs could do more than simply duplicate the entire
file–e.g. just
tear off the first page, or link the torn-off portion to the stationery
pad to allow the user to
tear off further pages later on–programs such as RagTime had a resource
with the setting
"stationery aware". When it came across programs with this setting, the
Finder would refrain
from taking action and let the program tear off pages from the
stationery pad of their own
accord.
Naturally, the whole thing went haywire when one tried to handle a
document that
had been promoted to a stationery pad by a System 7 Finder on a Mac with
older system
software. I pointed out this situation in the documentation on RagTime
3.1|7 (also in 1991)
and recommended saving stationery pads as such from within RagTime. This
advice remains
applicable to this day.
With the advent of OS X, resources have become an unwelcome guest. Apple
recom-
mends shipping products as "bundles" , which means that umpteen files
containing program
components are filed in a complex hierarchical structure of folders that
the Finder treats as
one object, launching the program they contain on a double-click. (As a
user, you can look
into "bundles" by using the command Show package contents .
Unfortunately, this setup doesn't allow one to enter the setting
"stationery aware" in
such a way that it is considered by the system. It appears that Mac OS X
developers were not
informed by their predecessors of how important this information is and
therefore did not
include an appropriate mechanism to handle it.
If you checkmark the n Stationery pad box in a file's Finder
information, the Finder
creates a duplicate when it is opened–without a hassle.
This shortcoming may be remedied in the next version of OS X.
RagTime-Stationery Pad Scenarios under OS X
What happens when one uses a RagTime file with n Stationery pad
checked...
• ...when it is double-clicked in the Finder?
The Finder duplicates the entire file and makes RagTime 5.6 for OS X
open the duplicate.
To avoid having duplicates clutter up your hard drive over time, RagTime
tries to delete
the duplicate, subsequently tearing off from the original stationery
pad. RagTime 5.6
for OS X uses parameters such as file size, creation and modification
dates as well as
internal properties to identify the original.
• ...when a volume is write-protected?
The Finder tries to create a duplicate. Of course, since this doesn't
work on a write-
protected volume, it generates an error message. The Finder generates
this message
before it asks RagTime 5.6 for OS X to open the duplicate.
Unfortunately, our hands our
tied here.
• ...when opening a file using the RagTime command Open?
Everything progresses as you would expect it to. RagTime 5.6 for OS X
recognizes the
stationery pad and tears off pages as specified in the stationery pad's
settings.
Tips for Handling Stationery Pads under OS X
• Always create stationery pads by saving them from within RagTime. This
ensures that the
stationery pad is unmistakably identified by its content and not merely
by externalities
such as a setting that is managed by the Finder.
• Uncheck the n Stationery pad box and append .rtt to the file name.
This keeps
the Finder from attempting to generate duplicates and even lets it
display the icon that
designates a stationery pad, thanks to the file's new extension.

Tips for Handling Stationery Pads under Mixed System Environments
It doesn't get any easier if you try to use the same stationery pads
under OS X and earlier
versions of Mac OS. We regret not being able to make any suitable
recommendations in this
case. It's best that you determine what's more important to you, based
on the following
information.
• If you have observed our tips for OS X (unchecked n Stationery pad and
appended
.rtt to the file name), earlier versions of Mac OS will not display the
correct icon for
the stationery pads.
If a stationery pad is saved as such from within RagTime, i.e. not just
by activating
the n Stationery pad box in the Finder, RagTime 6 recognizes the
stationery pad
nevertheless and tears off pages.
• If you leave your stationery pads untouched, as was customary under
earlier versions of
Mac OS (n Stationery pad checked and no special file name), OS X will
not display the
right icon, and the Finder will try to create duplicates, which RagTime
5.6 for OS X will
then attempt to delete.
• Tearing off pages using the RagTime command Open works in all
situations.
We are sorry that you have to put up with this inconvenience and hope
that Mac OS X
soon realize that a program always knows best how to handle its own
stationery pads.

6 WHAT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE?
Mac OS X is not yet advanced enough to accommodate some of RagTime's
features, and in
certain cases, it would be far too costly and time-consuming to support
them.
• Work on RagTime Connect hasn't been completed yet. There are no ODBC
drivers
available which are usable with the ODBC managment software of OS X.
• System search in RagTime documents
Previous Macintosh operating systems allowed you to search RagTime
documents
using Sherlock by employing "Find by Contents" plug-ins. This feature
has not been
documented for Mac OS X to date.
• Fax software adapter
Earlier versions of Mac OS had third-party fax software. The vendors
provided APIs that
enabled applications like RagTime to communicate with their fax
software. Under Mac
OS X, this is no longer possible.
• File names with more than 31 characters
• PhotoShop Aquisition Plug-In support has not been built-in.
Some of RagTime's old add-ons are based on technologies that are no
longer supported,
which means they are no longer available in RagTime 5.6 for OS X. These
include:
• 3dmf Converter (Three-Dimensions Meta File Format)
This converter for exporting infographics doesn't exist anymore, because
this file format
isn't supported under Mac OS X.
• External Functions for RagTime 3
These functions were originally developed for Motorola 68xxx processors
and can't be
used under Mac OS X since the system doesn't include emulators for that
generation of
processors. Only programs developed for the PowerPC processor family can
be executed
under Mac OS X.
l This limitation does not affect previous versions of RagTime 6, which
you can use
in Mac OS X's Classic environment.
• MiniFiler and MiniFiler Functions
The MiniFiler and its associated functions were also developed back in
the days of
RagTime 3 and can no longer be used under Mac OS X.
Address management is handled by Mac OS X's proprietary Address Book,
which you
can access within RagTime (see @ Address Book Functions [p. 7]).
