update hotsync in palm m515

is there a way to update the version of the o/s in the hand held
or the version of the Hotsync application
WITHOUT the synchronization with the pc?
I am unable to communicate with the palm using its USB cradle.
I have ver. 4.1 for the Palm desktop app in the pc.
my hotsync attempts fail probably because the palm o/s or hotsync version in
the palm don't recognize the USB cable or connection.
how can I upgrade a program version (in this case "Hotsync") without
connecting it to my pc?

I have only ever updated my Palm OS using the cradle, I don't think you can
do it without it.

As for installing or updating progs on it I would imagine you 'could' do it
via an IR setup but I have never done it this way.

I brought a serial lead for my M515 to hotsync to my works PC, (and keep my
USB cradle at home) from ebay for a fiver (UK), this would get over the
problem of USB not working.

My hotsync is version 4.0 BTW.

I don't think so.

I am unable to communicate with the palm using its USB cradle.
I have ver. 4.1 for the Palm desktop app in the pc.
my hotsync attempts fail probably because the palm o/s or hotsync version in

I don't think that there is anything the Palm side will have to
'recognize'. And considering the fact that the PC finds new hardware
every time you start the hotsync makes me believe that even more...

how can I upgrade a program version (in this case "Hotsync") without
connecting it to my pc?

There is no (at least no official) way to update individual PalmOS
applications, with or without HotSync.

Have you ever tried to hotsync as the administrator? Btw, there is no
need to reinstall PalmDesktop (including HotSync) for every user
(without administrator authorizations), just call (once per user)
'hotsync -r' resp. 'palm -r'.

Regards,

Michael

One, make certain that HotSync is actually running. Assuming this is a
Windows PC, look for a HotSync icon on your taskbar, near the clock in the
lower-left corner of your screen (assuming your taskbar is at the bottom of
the screen). If HotSync isn't running, click Start > Programs > Palm
Desktop > Hotsync to start it up.

Now, find that HotSync icon near the clock and right-click on it. Near the
top of the context-sensitive menu, you should see options such as "Local
Serial", "USB", and "Network". Is there a checkmark near the USB option?
If not, click on it in order to enable USB syncing.

If the USB option is not present, you have an old version of HotSync
Manager. Visit http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/win_desktop.html
and download the latest version of Palm Desktop which will include the
current HotSync manager as well. Install the new stuff, reboot your PC, and
try again.

Does that help?

To clarify something which you asked ("how can I upgrade a program version
(in this case "Hotsync") without connecting it to my pc?"), you do not
upgrade HotSync on your Palm device, it's the one on your PC which gets
upgraded..

The handheld's ROM can only be flashed through a cable/cradle connection.
Anyway, the hotsync problem you experience is certainly due to ESD.
Please connect to http://kb.palmone.com/PalmEU_uk.html and, in the 'Solution
ID' field enter 5598.
It will lead you to appropriate troubleshoot.
As mentioned in the article, be aware that your palm's data must be
backed-up before proceeding, either though a serial hotsync or using a
backup card.

Laurent.

Yes.

apparently the Palm hand held version of Hotsync is NOT able to communicate
with my pc even though I installed ver. 4.1 and selected USB during

No, the Palm side HotSync program *IS* capable of using the USB port,
otherwise your PC wouldn't (most probably) even see *any* new device.

I am looking for a method of reaching the sync program inside my Palm m515
without the USB cradle, in order to UPGRADE or CHANGE it so that eventually
it is able to work with USB and I would be able finally to synchronize and
install to it.

As others already told you, there is neither any (standard) way to
upgrade the HotSync program on the device alone nor should there be any
necessity for this.

Have you ever tried synching your Palm with another PC? Is it working
there (with your cradle or with another cradle)? Have you tried the
standard procedure for the SUDS problem (a repairable problem with the
Palm side USB controller, just *completely* empty the palm battery by
disabling the automatic switch-off feature and recharge it afterwards
for at least four hours before switching it on)?

Best regards,

Michael

No, that's *not* what he's talking about! Please read and execute the
steps described under
<http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_Story.asp?ID'85>! Caution: You
will loose *ALL* data on your Palm!

I have installed palm desktop version 4.1 and - from the PC point of view -
I have the USB communication method selected for synchronization. but
Hotsync inside my Palm M515 does not seam to work and recognize the PC
either by pressing the Hotsync cradle button or by choosing Hotsync the hand

If I remember correctly you described that an unknown device shows off
on the device manager in Windows as soon as you press the HotSync
button. IMHO this means that your PC recognizes a new USB device (which
is the Palm, not the cradle!), so the Palm HotSync program is working.
Actually, IIRC the new device 'Palm' should get registered with Windows
at the time you install the PalmDesktop und PC HotSync program.

So perhaps you should check this first: Did you perform the install of
the Windows software as a user with administrator authorizations?
Without those authorizations the install will not succeed! Lateron you
can work with normal user authorizations, but in this case you have to
call the HotSync program (and/or the PalmDesktop program) *once* with
the option '-r' to create some necessary registry entries for this user
as well.

I am trying to do a change or upgrade of some kind to the palm sync program
without the USB cradle because it doesn't work.

As I already mentioned in my previous posting, there is no standard way
of doing this and there should be no necessity for this either!

probably with a serial connection it might work (?) and I could somehow
re-program Hotsync in the hand held...

Where would get the data for 're-programming' from? ;-)

Best regards,

Michael

Obviously what you describe is an ESD issue, so there's no need upgrading
your m515.
An electrostatic discharge results in 'freezing' the handheld's USB port
ability to send the data, so that when you launch a hotsync, either via the
cradle's button or the palm itself, it won't launch on the computer because
it receives no data.
The only way to to troubleshoot this issue, and to turn back the palm to its
manufacturing setup, is to completely drain its battery by forcing the
handheld to stay on, preferably at maximum brightness. This process is
detailed in the knowledge library article I gave you he link.
Once more, should you need to backup your data before proceeding, you will
have to use a serial cable/cradle (ESD does not affect the palm's serial
port) or a backup SD card.

Laurent.
